Meta's spyware warning

Meta warned that the use of spyware is still a threat, and companies are still working on adapting and changing their tactics to counter it. Research shows, that spying software is mostly used to target journalists, politicians and human rights activists, even though some vendors say it's intended to focus on crimals and terrorists. Meta's report says that it removed from facebook and instagram number of Russian, Chinese and Israeli firms which were collecting peoples data and were trying to break into users accounts. It also removed more than 100 accounts linked to russian company, which was selling access to a platform that allows spying across the internet. After these events meta uptadated its software, and shared the information about this threat with governments and other companies.  I think that we should be more aware of social media threats, and companies should make more efforts to counter spyware. https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2022/dec/15/meta-facebook-owner...

Climate crisis activists occupy Gordon Ramsay’s three-star Michelin restaurant

14 climate crisis activist occupied Gordon Ramsay's, 3-star Michelin restaurant in London on Saturday evening. They occupied the tables, holding menu in their hands, without ordering anything. They claimed, that it is inequitable, that restaurants serve meals which minimal price is  £ 150, while over  2 milion people in britain are relying on food banks. They are also campaining for a plant-based food system, which is more ecological, less space-demanding, and would allow to feed millions of additional people. After two hours, restaurant closed, because service was disrupted, and protesters peacefully left. Restaurants's spokeperson said, that although he respects their opinions, their behaviour was very inappropriate and disrespectful, because they made stuff's work harder and ruined evenings of people who have waited months for their reservation. I think, that although their claims are mostly right, paralising people's work and wasting time of people, who had a rese...

Why is Finland using much more wood in constructions

By 2035 Finland wants to achieve full carbon neutrality. Wood as a construction material is much lighter, than other materials like concrete or steel, so less heavy machinery and energy is used during constructions, and building is quicker, as there is no need to wait until concrete will dry. It also has 20 to 30% less greenhouse gasses emmision. Wooden buildings can remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. Three-quarters of land in Finland are cevered by forest, so wood is very available, and wood producting companies are replanting logged areas Building with wood is a growing trend in the Finnish building industry. Developers are swapping from marerials like concrete, steel or bricks. Finland wood-building programme insures 45% of public building will use wood as a key material by 2025. In private sector wood is now key material in 4% of apartments and 16%of commercial buildings, and it is still growing. Source: https://www.bbc.com/news/business-62798950

Wildlife recovery in Europe

European Wildlife Comeback Report, commisioned by Rewiling Europe monitores 50 species in europe: 24 mammals, 25 birds and one reptile. It shows great increase in number of many wildlife species, such as grey wolfes, white-tailed eagles or brown bears. Number of grey wolves  increased by 1800%, number of white-tailed eagles by 445% since 1970s, and brown bear population increased by 44%, since 1960s. Eurasian beaver increased its range by 835% and increased its species abundance by 16000% since 1960s. This upturn is happening mostly because of human efforts. People started thinking more about enviroment, governments started giving animals habitats to live and legal protection. This report shows, that our measures matter, it is nice to see how nature is standing  up after the damage we have dealt.  Source: https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2022/sep/27/wolves-and-brown-bears-among-wildlife-make-exciting-comeback-in-europe-aoe

How ciggaretes affect the enviroment

Everyone have heard about how devastating for our health smoking is, but still over 1 billion people all over the world smoke almost 6 trillion ciggaretes every year. Except our health, smoking is also very damaging to the enviroment. Ciggaretes stumps are one of the the most common pollutants on earth and one of the most tainting. Each butt equals one cubic meter of undrinkable water. Also tobacco smoke is 10 times more polluting than car exhaust and it emites 84 metric tons of CO2. That is 10 times more than poland emised in 2018. But the worst part of smoking is that the most of tobacco concerns make experiments on animals, mostly dogs and rats. These animals inhale tobbaco smoke every day for 6 hours, for 3 months. After that animals are killed, and most of the results aren't revealed. The ocean cleanup

The ocean cleanup is a non profit organization, established by Boyan Slat. They develop new technologies, that help cleaning plastic in the ocean. Currently they are using system 002(jenny). It is a u-shaped barrier which is 800 meters long and 3 meters deep. It is carried by 2 vessels. In the center of barrier there is collection zone, once a week it is emptied, and the plastic is send to recycle. The ocean cleanup say, that 80% plastic in oceans comes from 1000 most pollutted rivers, so they developed the interceptor. The interceptor collects almost all of the plastic floating down the river, and it allows boats to still pass it. It is fully solar-powered, and it is fully automated. When it is almost full, it sends a message to local operator, which come empty it on the side of the river, and send trash to local waste management. Chemical weapon in baltic sea

After II world war, countries such as Germany, Great Britain, Usa and Russia threw from 50 to 100 tousand tons of ammunition and chemical weapon into baltic sea. At the time, they thought, that this is better sollution, than burning it. Now it is a ticking bomb, that can expolde any time. Scientists evaluate, that release 1/6 of it would destroy whole baltic enviroment for more than 100 years. Last year european parliament approved resolution about chemical weapon in baltic sea, and they will start research for technology, that will help safely remove these pollutants.
